BMW / MATERIAL FUTURES

WHAT IF THE CAR BECAME A LIVING SYSTEM?

We explore a new relationship between nature and technology—where materials are grown, regenerative, responsive, and cyclical by design.

01a / INTRODUCING MATERIA

MATERIA: A GARDEN OF POSSIBILITIES.

MATERIA: The Garden of Possibilities is an immersive exhibit to celebrate the launch of the iX, which explores the future potential of biomaterials and their possible applications in manufacturing. This part lab/part garden brings a diverse set of biomes together with the BMW iX to inspire designers, manufacturers, architects, builders and everyone in-between to look beyond the sustainable solutions we have today toward a regenerative future.

01 / THE PREMISE

A CAR IS A MATERIAL SYSTEM.

For over a century, we’ve built cars on a linear model. The future demands a new one—cyclical by design.

THE OLD LINEAR MODEL

EXTRACT → MANUFACTURE → USE → DISCARD

THE NEW CYCLICAL MODEL

GROW → FORM → USE → RECOVER → REGENERATE

WHAT IF NATURE BECAME THE MATERIAL LIBRARY?

We cultivate a living library of materials from algae, mycelium, plants and bio-polymers—each with unique properties, intelligence, and potential.

DESIGN WITH NATURE, NOT JUST FROM IT.

03 / VISIONARY MATERIALS

THE SEAT BECOMES A MATERIAL PROTOTYPE.

Visionary Materials is a material innovation program around a speculative seat where bio-based materials can deliver performance, comfort, and circularity—without compromise.

The seat is a material research platform for the development of future materials, focusing on

bio-based materials and circularity, increasing recyclability at the end of the lifecycle.

Luxury automotive is an opportunity to develop the aesthetics and quality of bio-based materials, and address performance aspects like lightweight construction and functionality.

THE MATERIAL LIFE CYCLE

SOURCE → FORMATION → USE → DISASSEMBLY → NEXT LIFE

05 / THE SHIFT

FROM MATERIAL SELECTION TO MATERIAL ECOLOGY.

TRADITIONAL MATERIAL SELECTION

Source materials. Select for performance. Extract value. Discard at end of use.

LIVING SYSTEMS APPROACH

Cultivate materials. Design for adaptation. Recover value. Regenerate into new life.

06 / WHAT COULD COME NEXT?

THE FUTURE CAR MAY BE LESS LIKE A MACHINE AND MORE LIKE AN ECOSYSTEM.

RESPONSIVE SURFACES

LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURES

SECOND LIFE BY DESIGN

REGENERATIVE PALETTES
